April is always a very taxing month! Thank goodness taxes are over and April gave way to showers for May flowers. It's time to enjoy some better weather and think green. And you can't eat any greener than Mann's Broccoli Wokly®, Broccolini®, Broccoli Cole Slaw®, and Stringless Sugar Snap Peas®, to name just a few of our items.



And we are proud to announce that starting May 10th we will be shipping our products to Food Lion Markets in Deleware, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Mann Packing welcomes Food Lion to our family of retial distributors.



National Cancer Control Month
The American Cancer Society calls attention to cancer control this month. The spotlight is on better health and staying well through physical exercise. Even a daily 20 minute walk can improve your health. Small steps make a big difference. They also share many resources for healthy living with tips to lower your cancer risk, specific screening tests and better food choices. You can find all of the details at American Cancer Society

Coming up on May 10th is National Women's Check up Day. Be sure to ask your doctor about the CA 125 cancer screening test. It is a simple blood test that can be done with your other blood work. It does not detect all types of cancers, but it can show if there is a rise in cancer cells in your body. CA 125 Information

There is so much grim news these days I would like to share some stories of people that have made it through successful cancer treatment. They are brave and courageous and have come out of their experiences with a new perspective on life. The American Cancer Society has compiled some of their stories.

Sysco is the global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments and other customers who prepare meals away from home. Mann Packing Company was honored to be in the company of Sysco's top 100 Suppliers for 2009. There were only six produce companies included in this award for 2009. The criteria was based on supplies by volume, service level, delivery, quality and revenue.

Remember Your Mom Everyday
Hopefully your mom is special everyday. Be sure to remember her on Mother's Day, May 9th. It's only a week away! If you are taking mom out to eat, make your reservations early. This is one of the busiest days in the restaurant world. If you decide to pamper her at home try making Mann's Frittata Recipe for breakfast. It's an upgrade from the burnt toast and gooey scrambled eggs you made when you were little. She will be impressed with your grown up cooking skills!

Fiesta Platter Available in California
Next Tuesday is Cinco Di Mayo. If you live in California you can find our Fiesta Veggie Platter with Salsa Ranch dressing at the following locations in Southern California: Ralph's and Food 4 Less. In Northern California they will be at Save Mart and Lucky's. And if you are not living in the sunshine state you can still find our veggie platters and make your own fresh salsa low cal dip by combining 1 cup low calorie ranch dip with 1/2 cup fresh salsa.


The Women & Men Behind Mann!
It is unusual to pick a top executive as the employee of the month. But Lorri is an unusual woman. She started out answering phones and filing at the Mann plant in high school. Today Lorri is the VP of Marketing and Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors. She is also Chairman of the Grower Shipper Association and owns her own publication, Coastal Grower Magazine (and I know she will edit this article!).

Lorri has worked long and hard for Mann Packing Company, with the support of her husband Tommy, children Jack and Sam, her sister's Gina and Dee Dee and her mom Barbara. She has led us all through some dark days and into a new era for Mann Packing Company.

Consumer Questions & Answers
Question #1: Billy from Newark, NJ wants to know why broccoli and broccolini are so good for you.

Answer #1: They are part of a group known as cruciferous vegetables (as well as cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, collard greens to name a few). These veggies have a high glucosinolate content which helps to eliminate carcinogens in our bodies before they can damage DNA. It is believed that this helps reduce the risk of cancer. Plus there is no cholesterol or fat and they are high in vitamin C.

Question #2: Mellie from Monterey, CA wants to know the difference between Broccoli Cole Slaw and Rainbow Salad.

Answer #2: Broccoli Cole Slaw contains broccoli, carrots and red cabbage. Rainbow Salad contains broccoli, carrots, red cabbage and a bonus of cauliflower. Both are delicious blends with two different tastes. They are great in salads, soups or on there own.
